Thunderbird in Linux - Strange second window problem

Linux Mint 14 Nadia  /  Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.5  /  FireTray 0.4.5

I've had a strange problem with Thunderbird recently where a second window mysteriously appears, almost as if there were two instances of Thunderbird running, except there's not and I don't want the extra window.

I've tracked it down to a glitch with the system tray extension, it seems to be quite generic and not specific to FireTray (which is a very nice tray addon) and found a quick work around to get rid of the phantom window when it decides to make an appearance.

This should work even if you have other system tray extensions as the fix is a simple one:

  • Go to Tools -> Add-ons
  • Disable the system tray extension
  • Shut down thunderbird completely (killall thunderbird to be sure)
  • Open thunderbird
  • Enable the system tray extension

Then the problem won't reoccur for quite some time, until randomly one day, it returns..
